Amid Singapore’s thriving food scene, Kim Choo Kueh Chang has endured as a cherished establishment since its modest origins in 1945. As the third-generation owners, my siblings and I, Edmond, proudly assume responsibility for carrying on our rich Peranakan heritage. Our unwavering commitment involves preserving tradition, extending our influence, and crafting unforgettable experiences for future generations.
Founded by Madam Lee Kim Choo – my grandmother – during the harrowing aftermath of World War II, Kim Choo Kueh Chang began its journey as a humble stall under a banyan tree at the intersection of Joo Chiat Place and Everitt Road. Following Singapore’s independence, Dr Fong Kim Heng, a pioneering political figure, played a crucial role in helping my grandmother secure a bank loan to acquire a commercial shop at 60 Joo Chiat Place. This pivotal move enabled Madam Lee Kim Choo to continue selling rice dumplings even during adverse weather conditions.
Over the years, our family business has become a symbolic representation of the local Peranakan heritage. As the third generation, we take great pride in upholding their legacy by managing the original store at 60 Joo Chiat Place and two additional shophouses at 109 & 111 East Coast Road.
The authentic flavours of our delightful creations have remained unwavering over time, establishing Kim Choo Kueh Chang as a preserver of Peranakan cuisine in Singapore. Our commitment to safeguarding our culinary heritage is exemplified by our responsibility in managing the esteemed Singapore Visitor Centre strategically located in the vibrant Katong and Joo Chiat districts.
As Singapore’s culinary landscape evolves, so does Kim Choo Kueh Chang. We acknowledge the significance of remaining connected to the local community while upholding our cultural heritage. In our pursuit of social progress and responsible business practices, Kim Choo Kueh Chang recognises the importance of forging enduring partnerships and collaborations with individuals, organisations, and businesses that share a common vision for growth. Such endeavours require mutual understanding and respect for sustainable approaches to lending support, which are thoroughly evaluated and implemented to address societal needs.
Furthermore, we greatly emphasise cultivating deep bonds with the local community. Kim Choo Kueh Chang’s objective extends beyond being solely a food and beverage enterprise; we aspire to become an all-encompassing heritage business that champions culture and fosters intergenerational connections. To realise this vision, we provide training initiatives and employment prospects to individuals from various backgrounds, including persons with disabilities, LGBTQ+ communities, and those facing socio-economic challenges. In doing so, we hope to establish an environment where everyone experiences a profound sense of inclusion and actively contributes to our collective heritage.
As a bridge builder, we actively champion preserving Peranakan heritage and work towards tackling diverse societal issues to enhance the well-being of underprivileged individuals. Recognising that donations alone may not provide a sustainable solution for assisting needy families, I emphasise offering employment opportunities and providing services to individuals and organisations. This fosters a fair exchange of goods and services, promoting an economy where businesses and society coexist in a shared space of mutual respect, empowering individuals to lead lives of dignity.
My family intends to take Kim Choo Kueh Chang public to amplify our endeavours. This strategic move will solidify our presence in our beloved Little Red Dot and foster an ecosystem that encourages more significant involvement of Singaporeans in their journey of expansion beyond Singapore’s shores.
Once we are ready to go public, we wish to commence training programs for locals to enable them to assume leadership positions for business expansion beyond the borders of Singapore. The prospects for growth are abundant, but substantial support is required to extend assistance to a broader range of communities and address pressing needs. These objectives cannot be achieved in isolation; collaboration and service from others are indispensable.
Kim Choo Kueh Chang’s growth pursuit is a positive case study for our nation’s economy and development. I believe that “our shared heritage defines us as Singaporeans. Our unity will enable us to succeed together as a society.”
I aspire for a broader recognition that our identity transcends being solely a nostalgic and delightful rice dumpling business, despite the brand name “Kim Choo.” We seek to foster unity among diverse traditions by establishing a Peranakan culture that all Singaporeans can embrace. Peranakan culture goes beyond exclusivity to Peranakan individuals or communities and surpasses being merely a fusion of races. It represents blending different cultures, defining the unique Peranakan way of life. This is the fundamental essence of what I hope Kim Choo Kueh Chang will be acknowledged for a taste of culture borne from traditions.
As the custodian of Kim Choo Kueh Chang’s heritage, my family is dedicated to securing the business’s long-term prosperity. We invite those who wish to join us on this transformative path, where traditions are revived, cherished memories are created, and the essence of culture is relished in every delectable bite. We are receptive to collaborations that can facilitate a smooth listing process on the SGX and aim to expand our influence and showcase Singapore’s lively heritage and culture to a global audience.
Together, we can create a platform that preserves our cultural heritage and fosters greater appreciation and understanding of Singapore’s unique identity.
My grandmother’s wisdom echoes in my heart as she used to tell my siblings and me that failures are woven into the fabric of our life journey. She believed that a single bright colour cannot form a rainbow; the vibrant spectrum of colours paints its beauty. Life takes on meaning when we embrace the lessons from hardships and tribulations.
Her words shaped us, imparting the virtues of resilience, determination, and hope. She ingrained in us the unwavering belief that every obstacle is conquerable and every challenge surmountable with courage and steadfast resolve. Her message inspires us, guiding us through life’s twists and turns.
If allowed to speak to my younger self, I would emphasise the importance of embracing mistakes and perceiving them as valuable stepping stones. These experiences can inspire future generations, enriching their lives with captivating stories and motivating them to embark on their unique paths of self-discovery.
As I tread the path my grandmother and parents set, my motivation stems from a profound commitment to preserve our cultural heritage and promote cohesion in our society. I firmly believe that by honouring our collective traditions and fostering meaningful relationships within our community, we can cultivate a harmonious future where the vibrancy of our Peranakan culture flourishes.
