Hello, my name is Jerry, and I am thrilled to introduce you to Ang Mo Liang Teh, your go-to destination for high-quality craft beer at wallet-friendly prices. We boast eight draft taps that rotate frequently, offering over a hundred diverse craft beer options to explore and savour. In case you didn’t know, Ang Mo Liang Teh, or 红毛涼茶, is the colloquial term used to describe our beloved ice-cold beverage, beer!
My journey to starting Ang Mo Liang Teh wasn’t smooth sailing. When employed by my previous company, I was tasked to set up a craft beer arm for the business. But the problem was that I had no clue about craft beer then! Determined to learn, I turned to my trusty friend Google and did a ton of research. I also met with various craft beer suppliers and enthusiasts, which gave me a better grasp of the industry and the product.
As I helped set up the craft beer bottle shop and shared my newfound knowledge and passion with the staff and customers, my interest in the subject grew stronger. Unfortunately, like many others, Covid took a hit on my employment. However, instead of letting the pandemic dampen my spirits, I took it as an opportunity to pursue my passion for starting a craft beer speciality store. Armed with my knowledge and experience, I conducted a thorough market study and financial planning before launching Ang Mo Liang Teh.
The most fulfilling part of starting and operating this business is the unwavering backing of friends, family, and patrons. Seeing customers return for a second or third visit indicates we’re doing something right. This loyalty drives us to provide top-notch customer service and exceed their expectations. Their trust and confidence in our business and me are invaluable, which empowers us to deliver quality craft beer at affordable prices. Nothing beats the feeling of knowing we have their support and loyalty.
Did you know that craft beer and commercial beer are two different worlds? They have their unique production methods, taste, and distribution that set them apart from each other. Craft beer is typically crafted by independent breweries that use traditional brewing methods and high-quality ingredients to create one-of-a-kind and flavourful beer styles that cater to a specific niche market. On the other hand, commercial beer is mass-produced by large-scale breweries using standardized recipes and ingredients to appeal to a broad range of consumers and distributed widely.
As a result, craft beer typically boasts more complex flavours and higher alcohol content than commercial beer. While craft beer may be more expensive, the unique flavours and high-quality ingredients make the price tag worth it. Consider a Toyota Prius and a Porsche 911. Both have similar essential components, such as metal shells, four wheels, and an engine, yet they are priced significantly different.
I embarked on this challenging journey during the pandemic’s 2 pax to 5 pax phase, where the measures were constantly changing due to the volatile situation and soaring infection rates. It was a rollercoaster ride, with restrictions shifting from 2 to 5 pax, then back down to 2 pax again. As with the entire F&B industry, the craft beer industry was hit hard, especially the breweries and distributors, who were not eligible for certain grants provided during that period.
Despite these challenges, I managed to keep things manageable for myself as the rent was low, I had no staff, and the customer base was within Singapore, allowing us to maintain relatively stable sales.
A motto I live by is “Ideas without action are worthless”. While many people may have great ideas, it’s the execution that truly matters. Without taking the necessary steps to bring an idea to life, it’s a dream that will never be realized. Successful execution requires dedication, focus, and perseverance, even in the face of obstacles and challenges. This includes setting specific goals, prioritizing tasks, and monitoring progress. Whether in business or personal life, taking action is essential for success. For example, start by taking steps towards a healthier lifestyle today to improve your health.
I anticipate that the craft beer scene in Singapore will continue to gain popularity and expand. With increasing number of breweries emerging, consumers are exposed to a broader range of options. Although the craft beer market remains niche and caters to a specific group of customers who value unique experiences over mass-produced products, the trend towards seeking new and refined experiences is rising. This, coupled with the growing affluence in Singapore, leads me to believe that the demand for craft beer will only continue to increase.
With that, Ang Mo Liang Teh aims to become the foremost craft beer purveyor offering a distinctive and unforgettable craft beer experience. Our ultimate goal is to establish a network of speciality craft beer bars across Singapore, although we recognize that this journey will be challenging and demanding. Nevertheless, this is the vision that guides us in our endeavours. We take pride in recommending beers that fit your budget and taste profile. Our aim is to create a fun and vibrant atmosphere that reflects the Singaporean spirit, evident in our name and the decor of our establishment with local slang. That’s the light-hearted vibes we strive for, also because I’m an ah beng. Haha!
